James Benn The First Wave (Billy Boyle book 2)

image_pdfimage_print

OMG!  I couldn’t read this fast enough.  What a story.  I didn’t know much about the North African invasion until I read this book.  Billy sure gets himself into some predicaments.  Daphne died in the last book leaving Billy’s friend Kaz without a girl.  Dianna, Billy’s girl gets captured by the villain Villard.  Well Billy gets his revenge late in the book.  Started the book (checked out from the library AND read on the Kindle app) on 2/6 and finished on 2/18.  12 Days isn’t to bad.  I probably could’ve finished sooner but the Olympics was on so I watched a lot of those instead of reading.

Giving this book a solid 9/10.

John Sandford Silent Prey

I started this one on 1/18/2022 and finished on 2/5/2022.  Another great “Davenport” novel.  Still love the writing style of JS.  He finally gets the villain that he has been chasing.  This time he was cutting out the eyes of his victims so they wouldn’t “watch” him from beyond the grave.  Loved the book.  Didn’t take me long to finish it.  Not sure he “hooked up” with anyone in this book.  He wanted to a couple of times with some old cop friends of his while he was in NYC.

I started this one on 12/17/2021 and WILL finish by end of the year. I’m actually like 70% done with the book when starting this post.  The story line is creepy.  2 killers.  Think “Throw Mama from the Train”.   You do mine and I’ll do yours.  Except now it’s like you do three for me and I’ll do one for you.  Lucas is hot on the trail.  He thinks he has one of them and the other he’s not sure about.  We will see when I finish it.

His girlfriend in this book is Cassie.  She’s an actress at a theater.  I finished the book on 12/30/21.  Loved it.  Lucas is still the man solving the crime.  Give this a solid 8/10.

James R Benn Billy Boyle World War II Mystery

I started this book (the real book NOT an Ebook) on 1/10/22.  Today is 1/18/22 and I finished today.  I was quarantined so I got lots of hours to read.  8 days is still pretty good for me to get through a book.

I love the writing style, the story line and the characters.  Billy gets introduced and joins the military not knowing that his Uncle is none other that General Ike.  Yup, that one.  Ike gives him a crime to solve and Billy along with some new friends Kaz and Daphne get to work.  Lots of twists and turns and he loses a friend but gains a girlfriend.  Dianna, Daphne’s sister of course.  He solves the crime, kills the murderer but lets the spy go.  Ike should have been mad, but that was the plan all along.

I give this book a solid 9/10.  Would recommend it to anyone.

Started on 1/1/2022.  Finished on 1/9/2022.  Loved this book and can’t wait to read the whole series.  This is actually book #13 in the series.  Billy Boyle (a Captain) runs the investigation of a murder of two people on an airbase in Russia.  1 Russian and 1 American are murdered in a supply warehouse.  Billy, Kaz and Big Mike must find out who the killer was.  Lots of things aren’t as they seem in the USSR and there are many characters in this book.  Great read, chapters are kind of long sometimes but I finished it last night and will give this a 9/10.  Love the writing style and characters.

Book 2 in the whole series.

Started this book directly after finishing the last one (Silken Prey).  Started on 12/2/2021 and hoping to finish before 12/15/21.  So far the story line is good but chapters (again) are rather long.

Lucas Davenport is a Detective in this book. The book finished well.  I’m writing this late so I don’t remember much of how it ended.  I just know I liked it.  I finished the book on 12/17/21.

Silken Prey by John Sandford

I don’t remember where I heard about this book.  I started it on 11/22/21.  I’m three chapters in.  Chapters seem long.  Story seems easy to follow.  Characters are easy to picture.  Seems like this is a book WAAAYYYYY down in the series.  I don’t like reading like that but I’m going to start this book and see how many holes there are in the story that I “should” know.  11/25/21….So….I’m about 1/3 of the way through the book and I literally can’t put it down.  It’s a great story.  If the rest of his stuff is this good then look out 2022, I’ll be reading a lot of John Sandford.  I’ll let you know when I finish it.

So I finished this book on 12/2/21 and started another one of his directly after I finished.  I didn’t even take a break.  Lucas Davenport is a badass.  He has people all over that he can call and get stuff done.  Tyran Grant (running for congress) has some body guards that have to “take care of” some people so she can get elected.  Well…..They get busted and dead thanks to Lucas.  There are multiple story lines in this book with a computer hacker (and his wife (a thief)) and one of Grant’s other security guards possibly getting a job with the Governor of Minnesota.

Loved it and giving it a 9/10.  Only because some of the chapters were really long.

We Begin at the End by Chris Whitaker

I actually forget where I heard about this book.  I started it on 11/7/21.  So far I’m not really that impressed.  The writing style is weird with a lot of commas and what seems like afterthoughts.  Chapters are to long.  Characters are named weird and I’m having a hard time picturing them in my head.

Finished on 11/21/21.  Characters, once you get them, are good.  The book is ultimately about the inner struggle of good and evil.  Duchess, hard knock kid, decides she needs to try and kill the man she thinks killed her mom.  She doesn’t know the whole story.  Star (her mom) is a “slutty” character.  Dicke Darke (wow he turns out to be a “good” guy) and Walk, the town sheriff.  Walk doesn’t want the town to change and does some things that aren’t in the best interest of the town OR the people he loves.

Duchess can’t do want she wants.  It gets done in the end…….

I still didn’t really care for the writing style but giving this one a 6/10.

Thicker Than Blood by Mike Omer

Love his writing.  Started this book on 10/18/2021.  The Zoey Bentley series is one of my favs.

Wow, this book is DARK!  Love the characters, the writing style, the chapter length.  I really dig his writing.  I’m still only about 75% done with the book but I’m loving it…. (11/3/21).

11/7/21…Once I hit the sweet spot of the book I couldn’t put it down.  Mike may be my new favorite author.  10/10 enjoyment.

Zoe and Tatum did it again.  The finally got Glover.  The cancer will get him or Zoe will….

Finished on 11/7/21

Her Perfect Family by Teresa Driscoll

So I started this book right after finishing “All our Darkest Secrets”.  I started it on 10/4/2021.  I’ve read three chapters so far.  I like the chapter style of different people per chapter.  This is the first book I’ve read by this author.  This is an Amazon First Read free book.  What can I lose?

British writer.  Lots of English references that you have to think about to understand.

Characters are well developed.

Daughter shot at Uni graduation.  Father, has secrets.  Mother, has secrets.  Daughter, has secrets.  Boyfriend (A) has secrets.  Boyfriend (S) don’t know yet but is cheating on his wife with daughter.  Oh S has secrets.  It’s not a ScoobyDoo mystery.  The ending was surprising.

I finished this book on 10/17/2021.  Ending was good.  Kind of predictable but I didn’t want to put it down.  The power was out so I pretty much read 20% of the book to finish it.
